As a magician, I knew I wanted to include a little bit of extra magic into our ceremony, but didn’t want it to turn into a “look at me, I’m the performer, and I’m doing a magic show” type of thing. My favorite type of magic is the kind that just happens in life, when people least expect it, so that’s what we did.
We started our ceremony by vanishing our wedding bands (y’know, typical wedding stuff). Then we continued on with the ceremony, and at one point, we talked about traditions and explained that we decided to bring in a new tradition for our wedding. We’re both “camp people,” so we decided to create a web of love using yarn (similar to a typical icebreaker at summer camp). The ball of yarn was clearly in view from before we even walked down the aisle and before the ceremony even started. I didn’t want people to connect the dots and think this was part of the rings vanishing, so I intentionally asked Jeff to hold the wine glass with the yarn in it and had him put his hand on top of the glass to prevent the ball from flying out.
We gave the loose end to one of our guests, asked them to hold the yarn between their fingers to create an anchor point, and asked them to continue to pass the end to someone else who had not yet had it. As the yarn pulled when it was passed around, a web was created. The web was meant to be symbolic of fate, destiny, and the crazy ways we cross paths in life’s diverse web. Our web was also a representation of bringing our friends and family together and creating new connections.
We wanted to take advantage of having a small wedding, and wanted to create a certain level of intimacy with our guests, so after every person was touching a piece of the web, we asked our guests to look around and take in the special moment in time.
Once the yarn was fully unraveled, our web of love was created and our rings magically reappeared, tied together! ✨
