EORA HERE I COME! 🗣🗣🗣 Stoked to be presenting a live/hybrid set as AN.IĆ with the mega talented @kikikikianna for @soft_centre 💫☄️💫☄️ SF has always been a dream of mine since I started DJ’ing, definitely in my top 5. <3
Trans artists are, unfortunately, almost never on festival lineups of this scope. As a DJ who primarily plays electronic music I’m either too ‘experimental’ for queer audiences, or too ‘cheesy’ for straight audiences. I usually avoid this kinda discourse about being trans in the music industry, because honestly I’m more than just a transwoman, but I feel as if it’s important to see what goes on behind the glitz & glamour for my cis-ters.
First and foremost, we operate within a MUSIC BUSINESS. Even though we can be as punk as we want to with our dance floors, we’re still facilitating bar sales, as well as curating playlists and innovating music sales. Branding is sacrosanct to success. I can’t tell you how many gigs I’ve had to ‘butch up’ and code-switch for to move past the “stereotype”. So it’s difficult for me to see my cis counterparts on major lineups, when I know I should be right there beside them. Not as an opening slot for token points. As somebody whose been in the game for four-ish years, with so much experience and a wealth of network in Naarm I know my shit. But the reality is, there will always be a physical person there DJ’ing, and most times it will always be somebody who is more marketable.
But I try to avoid pessimism, I see these battles as stepping stones for my growth, said challenges make me a stronger person and an even better DJ & performer. So I can’t wait to present this visually & sonically, November 25.
Extremely grateful for those who have supported me, always make your presence known. Love always wins. 💌💌💌
