Horrorstör is original in its plotline and also aesthetics of the book, i gotta give Grady Hendrix that!
Imagine an IKEA like store, filled with its cult-like corporatespeak and the dream it sells to the consumer while in reality is just psychological-tactic to get people to spend more.
And then imagine this IKEA-like store that is haunted by ghosts of a past prison back in the 17th century. That’s where our story expands.
I love the clever play of graphics at the beginning of each chapter, where it features a furniture type, and then as the book slowly inches towards being more dark, the furnitures start morphing into torture devices.
The prison warden ghost also reminds me a lot of A Clockwork Orange. Even though his character is meant to be spooky, i still find it rather humorous that this “ghost” still remains delusional about how he can cure people and “free” them via his method.
I’m sure this is satire piece is a sociopolitical dig on something in our current world, but I haven’t managed to connect the dots just yet.
All in all, this is an enjoyable read. It wasn’t mindblowing, but more a silly and entertaining horror-themed read for the weekend.
I gotta say the book is cleverly designed though, and for that i have to give kudos to the publisher @quirkbooks !
