'I like the surface of threads that I make. Every square inch differs from the next, as in the creations of nature.' - #MagdalenaAbakanowicz
Born in 1930 in Poland, artist Magdalena Abakanowicz created radical sculptures from woven fibre. She began making abstract fibre works in the 1950s. Her earliest works were vibrant hanging textiles, which she named her ‘Abakans.’ These were soft, organic, towering works that hung from the ceiling – a new form of sculptural installation she became best known for. She then went beyond textiles to work with materials such as bronze, wood, stone, and clay.
Next month, a major exhibition of Abakanowicz's extraordinary textile works opens at Tate Modern in 'Every Tangle of Thread and Rope'. Find out more or book tickets by clicking the link in today's bio.
