Due to recent events, For The Gworls has decided to end our weekly residency at Club Lambda. As an organization dedicated to supporting Black trans artists' livelihoods, creating safe spaces, and providing platforms, our responsibility is to provide an open and inclusive space and community that understands and challenges all forms of oppression primarily experienced by Black trans people. Former Lambda staff members, as well as guests at our weekly events, informed us that Lambda staff and their security team had made inappropriate remarks to and about Black trans attendees, including members of the For The Gworls core team on more than one occasion. For The Gworls team members were also excluded from key decisions regarding the residency, which made some attendees uncomfortable. The decision was made to end our partnership because we pride ourselves on upholding and protecting all Black trans people who enter our space. All For The Gworls events aim to create a space where members of all gender identities are welcome and celebrated. We envision a space where Black transgender people in New York - and the Black queer community at large - can find healing, connection, self-exploration, and education to feel safe and centered. Feedback and change are important to us, and we envision a space and staff that are always responsive. When this vision is challenged, we must change course. This is an opportunity to provide our community members with the right tools and information based on our personal experiences at various event spaces in NYC and Brooklyn. On our website, we will publish our "safe spaces" list. Eventually, we hope to expand this system to include other states as well by working with organizations nationwide.
