Attis (Green) Attis (Red) Cybele Enters Rome “This series was made in response to "Poisonous Storytelling lyric," "sky god without uterus," which takes aim at monotheistic, patriarchal religion in the context of a litany of global social ills. I offer these up as the memory of an alternative. Cybele is an ancient Phyrgian goddess of mountains and wilderness, whose cult migrated westward to Greece and eventually Rome, where she was also known as Magna Mater. Attis is her son and lover, a beautiful boy who was ritually sacrificed each spring, his severed genitals thrown in the soil to fructify the great mother's womb and guarantee that the wheel of time continues to spin. These works are photos I collect as sources, which I've altered with ink and bleach. The colours refer to the myth of Attis: the green of the pine on which he's hung, the red of his blood, the purple of the violets that flower where it's been spilled.” Elijah Burgher Elijah Burgher (@poor_little_ghost_boy) is the seventh artist to participate in "Halls of Amber" a group show of sorts that @robert__fox has curated, utilizing social media to share the spark of creativity from artists we love and admire. #HallsofAmber #HerculesInAmber #HerculesandLoveAffair #Elijahburgher #RobertFox
