@sydney_sweeney is set to star in and executive produce a new Barbarella film for Sony Pictures. Originally based on Jean-Claude Forest’s 1962 sci-fi comic of the same name, it was adapted into the 1968 film starring Jane Fonda as the title character, a space-traveller sent by the United Earth government to stop an evil scientist from destroying humanity.
Rager Vadim’s original film boasted out-of-this-world costumes by Jacques Fonteray, whose futuristic vision has contributed some of the most indelible images of Space Age fashion. Though the reboot’s production is still in development, with no writer or director attached, we can’t help but fantasize about the potential for some major high fashion collaborations.
Often erroneously credited for the original film’s costume design, Spanish fashion designer Paco Rabanne, known as an enfant terrible of the 1960s French fashion scene, served as heavy source of inspiration for Fonteray. Under creative director Julien Dossena, the house continues to this day, employing its signature chainmail in new silhouettes and applications. Could there be room for an actual collaboration? We certainly think so.
Another fashion designer with a vision fit for the silver screen could be Loewe’s Jonathan Anderson, whose Spring 2023 collection featured transparent moulded bodices that recalled Barbarella’s own. Anderson’s other recent warped and surrealistic experiments would add a thrilling new dimension to the new film.
And Barbarella’s iconic monkey fur look? Gucci has been turning some pretty amazing two-toned faux fur outerwear in its recent runways. And throw some Rick Owens into the mix, naturally.
Though not a commercial success, Barbarella has since attained cult status among sci-fi nerds and beyond. So much so, that multiple attempts at a remake have been made over the years, including from director Robert Rodriguez in 2007 and Robert Luketic in 2009.
If we can suggest one more thing, a cameo by Jane Fonda, who is still alive and fabulous, could be the cherry on top. Are you excited for the new Barbarella?
