Every year, @btwfoundation hosts #BeKind21, which calls on participants to practice an act of kindness each day from September 1st to September 21st. As an Advisory Board member for the foundation, I’m exploring how kindness can be used as a tool to find common ground and connection that transcends one’s community, into many others. Reflecting on my own experiences as a Disabled individual, here are some ways you can show kindness to the Disabled community: 1. Ask (don't assume) if we need help. If the answer is no, respect that response. Disabled people have many years of lived experience, so we know if and when we need to ask for help. 2. Recognize the talents of disabled people. In many ways, disabled people are still not recognized as equal in society. Encourage others to recognize the talents of the disabled community in the board room, in creative fields, or as generally valuable contributors to the world. 3. Promote accessibility. Create experiences that are accessible for all, whether it be through the social media you share, the events you plan, or the workplace you manage. 4. Ditch the euphemisms. It’s kind to ask peoples’ language preferences and be conscious of ableist language. 5. Respect our boundaries. Keep in mind that equipment is often an extension of a person’s body. Always respect personal space. #Accessibility image descriptions in the comments.
