Joyce Bryant. Lena Horne. Ella Fitzgerald. Nina Simone.
These are the women with extraordinary talent who defined 20th-century jazz in America and the subject of Rebecca Moses’ new exhibition “Voices.”
Known for her realistic portraiture, Rebecca’s latest body of work features eight larger-than-life (6’ H x 4’ W) paintings of female jazz icons rendered in exuberant colors and three-dimensional accents such as leafing, rice paper, and rhinestones.
Rebecca hopes her work will not only honor these luminaries as vocalists but also highlight their enduring legacy as social justice advocates: “Perhaps when young creatives see these paintings and read their fascinating biographies they will be inspired to emulate the talent, courage, and dignity of these visionary women.”
Ralph Pucci adds, “There’s a close correlation between our ideas at PUCCI and jazz. The icons in ‘Voices’ took the notes of the music that were in front of them and brought them to something unexpected.”
"Voices" is now open at RALPH PUCCI Los Angeles.
