This grizzly bear selfie was taken right before this bear dismantled the camera. That’s one of the risks that come with collecting camera trap images—that the wildlife may notice it and make a toy out of it. This image came from a study that’s comparing eDNA analysis with the more widely used camera trap method to see how we can best apply both approaches in the areas where we work.
Definition:
eDNA: Soil, water, snow, or even air in the environment contains DNA naturally shed by animals through their hair, feces, saliva, and skin. Studying this environmental DNA, or eDNA, can give us information about the health of an ecosystem and its species.
