In my recent Moonbow newsletter about spooky children’s books, there are a few not-so-scary books. Like “Tales from Moominvalley,” the 6th book in Tove Jansson’s famous Moomin series. It’s not a book you would immediately think of for Halloween. And unlike the other books in the series, it's not a novel but 7 engrossing short stories (I’m a massive fan of Jansson’s short stories). These stories aren’t exactly scary, but there is a subtle horror to many of them. They tackle deep, complex emotions, but because of Jansson’s acerbic wit and keen sensitivity, they’re more delightful than disturbing. I find they’re perfect to read out loud to kids on a cozy fall evening. And being the vintage book snob that I am, it pains me not to have a copy of the first edition of this book (the cover is so good), but I did find this used 2018 collector’s edition, and it’s pretty nice.
