A perfect first day of winter image from the collection, by George Gilbert—that face says it all. George Gilbert was a freelance photographer for the New York Times, Newsweek, and other publications, as well as an advertising photographer—in fact, it was his apprenticeship at a commercial photo studio, which he completed after dropping out of Brooklyn College, that began his career. During WWII Gilbert joined the US Air Force to aerially map locations using photography, also training military personnel in the techniques needed to build out these kinds of maps. Image: George Gilbert, A Cold Day, Minnesota, 1947.
