More than 40 percent of homeless teens struggle with depression, which is 12 percentage points higher than their housed peers. School-age children and youth who are homeless are three times more likely to attempt suicide than students who live at home with a parent or guardian (20 percent versus six percent housed). Additionally, research has found that LGBTQ youth experiencing homelessness are twice as likely to die by suicide compared to heterosexual youth who are homeless, according to the National Coalition for the Homeless. Suicide prevention begins with all of us. Evidence suggests that if you offer support and a listening ear, you can reduce someone's distress. Don't be afraid to start the conversation. Difficult conversations are always worth it. Check in and listen with compassion. Be there. Be aware - look out for those who may be having a challenging time. See the signs and act. If someone is in crisis stay with them and get help. If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline '1-800-273-TALK (8255)' or text TALK to 741741 at the Crisis Text Line #suicidepreventionmonth #suicideprevention #covenanthouse
