Today the Mayor of Atlanta signed the resolution unanimously passed by the @atlcouncil to allocate $300,000 for abortion funding to be dispersed by us as Atlanta’s local abortion fund. We are so excited for this monumental course of action taken by our elected officials to become the first city in the Southeast to make a commitment to funding abortion. As our communities face more and more extreme challenges to accessing abortion care, our elected officials must continue to take actions like this to ensure we’re ALL able to access the care we need and want.
HOWEVER, as we celebrate this win that was largely made by the scheming and dreaming of local reproductive justice activists, we must also acknowledge the harm that our elected officials can also cause to our communities. This week Mayor Dickens announced intentions to expand the Atlanta City Detention Center. A true commitment to reproductive justice means a commitment to decarceration and closing the jail as the mayor previously committed.
We fully support the @closethejailatl campaign and call on @andreforatlanta and others to close the jail! The funding allocated to expand the jail can be used to provide the resources our communities need to fully thrive! That’s reproductive justice!
