Jeff Jank, Madlib and myself opened Rappcats as the digital space where we could discuss and offer the music and art we create to the world. Then, around eight years ago, when Los Angeles record stores per capita outpaced our city’s amount of good taco joints, I realized we needed a physical space, and our series of pop up record shops began. Those events were based around the colliding memories of great record stores and record conventions of yore. In what was first the foyer of Now-Again and Madlib Invazion headquarters, and then spilled into the former mixed martial arts gym next door, I worked with dozens of collectors, musicians, labels, archivists and vinyl emporiums to stage what was, at its most frequent, a monthly series of events celebrating the enthusiasm and fervor that comes from record collecting – ahem - “culture.” We’ve been closed for a bit, renovating our space in Highland Park, and we’re opening again on September 17th. Our monthly events are now more like quarterly events, on average, but we’ll be opening at least once a month through the end of the year, sharing music and cementing legacies. And we’re staring with a deep one – the first in a series around an astounding collection pieced together by the late Prince Be, co-founder of PM Dawn, a 90s hitmaker who spent more than most anyone on the deep type of albums now known and sought after by thousands. More info to come here, and link in my stories for some specifics.
