Samora Machel was the first President of Mozambique, serving from 1975 until his death in 1986. He was a revolutionary leader and a key figure in Mozambique’s struggle for independence from Portuguese colonial rule. Machel was also the leader of FRELIMO (Front for the Liberation of Mozambique), the movement that fought against colonial rule and later became the ruling party. As president, he pursued socialist policies, promoted education and healthcare, and supported liberation movements in other African countries. He died in a plane crash near the South African border under mysterious circumstances, with suspicions of South African involvement.
