Welcome to #FAQFriday! (Got a Q for our founder, Tiffany Masterson? Drop it in the comments and she’ll try to respond!) Q: Is it really safe to use retinol during the day? If so, how does it interact with vitamin C? What makes A-Passioni and A-Gloei “daytime OK”? A: There are a lot of opinions about this one, but in our view, it comes down to the research. And the research is very clear: Retinol can definitely be used during the day, and it is even more beneficial when you pair it with vitamin C. Let’s break down the most common points of confusion and concern. First, retinol does not increase skin’s sensitivity to sunlight. 🥳 Research has shown that not only is retinol stable when worn under a broad-spectrum sunscreen, but much like vitamin C, it actually boosts skin’s defenses against UV-generated free radicals. In addition, research has shown that a combination of retinol with other vitamins in your skincare routine maximizes their combined benefits for skin. This is especially true for retinol and vitamin C. The two work synergistically when worn under your sunscreen, each amplifying the other’s ability to defend against UV-generated free radicals. Those benefits are *in addition* to their other benefits for the skin (boosting and preserving collagen production—aka firming—as well as improving both uneven texture and hyperpigmentation). So there isn’t anything special about A-Passioni or A-Gloei that makes either OK for daytime use. (They’re special in many other ways that we don’t have the space to get into here.) It’s actually what’s special about retinol itself that makes it both effective and beneficial to use during the day, under your sunscreen, and even more so when mixed with vitamin C. At the risk of repeating myself, don’t forget to layer on Umbra sunscreen to keep your skin protected and maximize those beautiful results. 😎tm
