On June 16, 1976, Black students took to the streets of Soweto to demonstrate against being educated in Afrikaans, a language mostly spoken by White people in South Africa. Apartheid police opened fire, murdering hundreds of young people including 12-year-old Zolile Hector Pieterson. Sam Nzima’s photograph of Pieterson being carried by a resident next to his horrified sister was seen around the world. The Soweto Uprising was one of the turning points in the anti-apartheid struggle.
