Robes open in the front; gowns open in the back. Use this as your default, even when the growth/mole/area of concern is on the front side of your body. The reason that the vast majority of healthcare professionals (no matter the specialty) want you to put your gown on with the opening in the back is because it makes it much easier for us to examine you while also allowing you to maintain a bit of modesty. When the opening is in the front, it becomes much harder for us to look at anything on your backside without you having to completely remove your gown and expose everything.
