Mabel’s Gone Fishing (@mabelsgonefishing) co-chef and co-owner Chelsea Coleman and co-owner and wine pro Rae Gurne created a beautiful space and a menu that represents the flavors one might encounter along the Iberian Coast in a hip enclave in San Diego.
The clams and ham is a satisfying stunner, a mountain of steamers that arrives floating in a pool of savory ’nduja-laced broth with plenty of tangy grilled sourdough to sop it all up. Make it a night at the bar with stellar Spanish-style gin and tonics plus snacky bites of crudo, or BYO something purchased from the attached wine shop, linger over locally caught entrees, and dig into a slice of Basque cheesecake for dessert. Miraculously, despite the dolphin sink and mermaid statue, there isn't a trace of nautical-pub kitsch or tourist-trap cliche. Mabel's is just cool.
