One of the ultimate ways to honor a legend is to adapt her writings for a new generation. I’m thrilled to unveil the cover of MAGNOLIA FLOWER, illustrated by @loveiswiseillu. This picture book is coming on September 6, 2022. 🌸🌺 Many thanks to the @zoranealehurstontrust, editor Luana Horry, @harpercollinsch, and editor Tracy Sherrod for this opportunity to honor Zora. Many thanks to @harlemportland and the @schomburgcenter for helping us announce this project tonight in Harlem. I’ll be adapting selections from Zora’s treasure trove into a series of six books for young readers spanning picture books, board books, and middle grade titles. As a girl dad who wants kids to be exposed to a diverse array of illustrious storytellers, I could not be more excited to help bring to our children some of the stories that Zora Neale Hurston wrote and collected. MAGNOLIA FLOWER is adapted from a 1925 short story by Zora. Told by a River to a Brook, an Afro-Indigenous girl is born to parents who fled slavery and the Trail of Tears.
