I wish nothing but love for everyone!
Trans and nonbinary people are not a monolith. We don't all think the same or have the same views of our identities. Therefore, it's impossible for 1 or even 30 trans people to speak for all of us. Our diversity is beautiful.
My intention for the entirety of my public life has been to celebrate the profound humanity of trans people and offer critical interventions when that humanity is being undermined.
Any point of view that strips trans folks of the dignity to define ourselves on our own terms or reduces trans people to our bodies is biological essentialism. This is objectifying and therefore dehumanizing. If that is the point of view which you choose to share, then you will be dehumanizing trans and nonbinary folks. Trans people can also dehumanize other trans people.
Dehumanizing jokes about trans people exist in a larger social context that seeks to invalidate trans identity and erase us. Look at the epidemic of anti-trans violence and trans homicides. Look at the over 100 pieces of anti-trans bills introduced in 35 states this year alone. There is an organized political attack against trans folks right now. Many of us cannot walk down the street without being harassed or experiencing violence on a daily basis.
Correlation is not causation. But many times when I have experienced violence in my life, my perpetrators thought it was a joke. They laughed as they chased me, held me down, kicked and beat me. As they sexually assaulted me. A year ago, mobs of people violently attacking Iyanna Dior were seen in a viral video, laughing. In another viral video, Muhlaysia Booker's attackers thought violently attacking her was hilarious. She was murdered months later. #yourelaughingweredying
