So honoured to have been invited to the White House by The President of The United States of America, Joe Biden and The First Lady, Dr Jill Biden to celebrate the 32nd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Biden spoke about how the ADA was born and the fearless Disabled people who fought for justice, conducting sit-ins in federal buildings, obstructed inaccessible buses, and marched through the streets to protest injustice.
The disability rights movement sought justice in the courts and in the halls of Congress and for the first time, the exclusion and segregation of Disabled people was viewed as discrimination.
And without the courage, strength and determination of generations before us a lot of us would be living very different lives.
Biden also spoke about Disability Pride, how Disability is an identity we are proud of and that it should be celebrated!
I think it is important to always remember that it is ok to be proud of being Disabled but still have a complicated relationship with our bodies and minds.
We celebrate the ADA, it is our foundation, and we continue to fight for equity and justice.
I am so grateful and honoured to have held space with many activists today that I greatly admire.
