Peter Saul: Gun Moll, 1961
“Gun Moll” is emblematic of Peter Saul’s casually confrontational style. Exploring and exploiting the abstract expressionism of the moment, Saul confronts de Kooning’s “Woman I” (1950-52) through his choice to depict a formally violated woman. Rather than disempower or disembody her, Saul pictures this underwear-clad female wielding a gun and commanding the composition. Chatted up by a talking hamburger in front of a soda-filled refrigerator, she seems to delight in the absurd and rampant consumer culture that surrounds her. The brushy, acrid abstraction of the background renders consumerism and pure abstraction in typical Saul fashion as simultaneously dark and hilarious.
