Robert came to me dealing with back pain when deadlifting for the past 2-1/2 years! He had seen 2 physical therapists & 2 chiropractors, and while the stretching, adjustments and ultrasound they performed helped his symptoms in the short term – his pain always returned when getting back to deadlifting as they weren’t treating root cause.

One test I performed that I first learned From Dr. Stuart McGill had him pull up on a bench in a neutral spine – this created no pain, however rounding his back did, meaning he was intolerant to flexion loads and we needed to enhance his core stability to minimize flexion.

I taught him to brace his core in the standing position before then hinging, then taking a big breath in the bottom before bracing one more time and then starting his deadlift. On the way down remember to stiffen the core again and lower like an RDL to the knee before setting it down.
