Nom Nom. @ruleoneproteins 40% of site wiiiiiiiiiiiide (link in bio). —— Since this is technically a Labor Day sale, a quick aside: This “end of summer” holiday is often glossed over when is unfortunate given its radical origins, particularly with what we’ve experienced over the past two years with COVID and essential workers, new union formations, Striketober 2021, “the great resignation,” and other forms of solidarity, fighting for workers’ rights, dignity and the right to not only live but thrive in a world that values profit and violence over people. The holiday’s roots date back to the late 19th century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize workers’ contributions during the age considered the Great Upheaval (which started with railroad workers fighting back against continuous cut wages). May 1st emerged in 1886 as an alternative holiday for the celebration of labor, later becoming known as International Workers' Day in the early 20th century. The date had its origins at the 1885 convention of the American Federation of Labor, which passed a resolution calling for adoption of the eight-hour day effective May 1, 1886. The proximity of the date to Chicago’s Haymarket Affair in May 4, 1886, further accentuated May First's radical reputation. Some labor unions at this time disagreed about when a holiday celebrating workers should be, with some advocating for continued emphasis of the September march-and-picnic date while others sought the designation of the more politically charged date of May 1st. Conservative Democratic President Grover Cleveland was concerned that a labor holiday on May 1st would become a commemoration of the Haymarket Affair and would strengthen international socialist and anarchist movements. In 1887, he publicly supported the September Labor Day holiday as a “less radical” alternative, formally adopting the date as a United States federal holiday through a law that he signed in 1894. 🗣 Which side are you on, my people?
