I think the sentiment behind the phrase is great. The general idea that hairstylists should have a very profitable & successful business is something that I wholeheartedly support. But “charge your worth” is so vague and can feel misleading. What is your worth based on, exactly? Personally, if the “charge your worth” movement was around when I was starting out in the hair world I may have charged basically nothing because my confidence behind the chair was non existent at most times 😂 I was constantly (and still am) fighting imposter syndrome, so the charge your worth idea would have done me a disservice. But my salon neighbor may have been charging the highest prices in the salon despite being very freshly licensed and having less clients than any other stylist because, well, they saw their “worth” as pretty high. (No hate! Just pointing out that everyone probably sees their “worth” differently). Charging based on real, quantifiable numbers seems a bit easier for me to wrap my head around. Telling clients prices that are based on numbers derived from things like expenses and a well thought out hourly rate feels more logical and allows for confidence when speaking about prices. If you’re looking for more info about how to structure your pricing, I have some resources for you: @beautybusinessguide has an extremely in depth course that analyzes your entire business and designs a menu based on where your business it currently at. (She also taught a class on @the.BCU covering how to determine your operating budget and create a realistic menu) @ninatulio has sooo many resources for stylists regarding budgets, pricing for both independent stylists and commission stylists! (She also taught a class on @the.BCU covering the basics of commission stylist vs. booth renter!) @brittseva has all kind of tools and resources for stylists that cover not only establishing pricing and a menu but how to improve your business overall as a whole! I also have a class on BCU called “Let’s Chat: Pricing” that discusses establishing pricing and also how I go about increasing prices and ensuring that I’m bringing value to each appointment. Tell me your thoughts below!
