What do all these photos have in common? The places in them either don't exist or are radically different today. It's been a wild spring/early summer in the mountains for the places I care about, and difficult on the people who live there. Each of these events on their own is big, but together it's horrifying to see the impact of a warming world on our planet. What to do? Well, at this point we have to adapt as best we can, it's unstoppable. And we have to limit the future damage. The world can do without ice or mountain climbers, but these glaciers are our reservoirs, our mountain water towers, and they are changing FAST. Captions:
1. Ueli Steck and I lived and climbed together near Interlaken, Switzerland, in about 2000. We were training and competing in the Ice World Cup, and climbed on these overhanging features near Grindlewald a lot. They are gone. So is Ueli. I miss both. @klausfengler shot.
2. Athabasca Glacier. This was shot by @christianpondella in the last five years. Last year up to 20M of the glacier melted off, a record I hope isn't repeated. This is gone.
3. Kilimanjaro, Messner Route. have 50 years of photos like this. But when we went back in 2019 it was gone. The glacier feeding it has shrunk massively, and while it may reform I doubt it's ever going to be reliable again.
4. Marmolda Accident. Terrible. It's been an incredibly low snow year in the Alps, followed by a hot, hot spring and summer. I would never think the shape of this glacier would result in it collapsing. But it did...
5. Abbot Pass Hut, Alberta. This hut sheltered climbers for over 100 years, but the permafrost it was built on recently melted out, end of hut. We lost a huge amount of history, and a really great place to stay. Events like are a huge "DANGER" sign if you're a mountaineer: We rely on permafrost to hold our mountains together. Sad.
6. Swiss Camp, Greenland. Not as recent, but I'll never forget Dr. Konni Steffens saying, "This should not be happening." He had built the platforms to survive some melt, but nothing like what took the camp out.
