Been about a year since I left the sacred DC Arts Studios. Yes I made a lot of good ( and bad ) art and it taught me how to live as an artist yada yada yada. But in the 7 and a half years I was there, those gray fluorescent lit hallways and makeshift studios also served as a refuge, a home at times, and a secret playground. The building itself had endless rooms and roofs and forgotten offices from which to explore. Once we even found a functioning sauna. And used it. Once we slept on the roof and watched the sun rise over Washington. Once or twice we threw wild parties on that roof. I often felt like Aladdin. Ruling a kingdom of old freight elevators, back entrances, and broken toilets. The people I met there will always be family. Even if we didn’t talk that much, a beautiful intimacy was formed as we listened to each other’s art being made over the half walls.
