🔸Barrels, Hogshead, Butts 🔸 These are the type of casks we hear most often when talking about whisky maturation. 🥃Everyone who’s been to a distillery will have seen them, some might even have watched them being assembled at a cooperage. Not many will have experienced manouvering a fully filled cask.💦 Second day of Whisky School was spent with the production team; filling, marking, rolling, and storing casks in the warehouse. The distillery is currently making Springbank, so that was the new make in the barrels and hogshead that we filled🤩 Filling the casks and rolling them are the easy bit, rolling them in place with the bung facing up requires more skilled manouvering 🫨 These were then moved into the warehouses for storage - it was here the hard work really began. Whilst it was sunny and a nice 20 degrees outside ☀️, inside the dunnage warehouses we were pretty much soaked in sweat 🥵- having to move the casks pretty much all by hand💪. It must have been so hot in there during the particularly warm patch of weather they had a couple of weeks prior to our term! It was a tired but fulfilling day - we really appreciate how much of a hard work it is and makes us savour our drams even more. I kept thinking throughout the day that whilst it’s all fun for us doing this for a day, it would be pretty hard to do this full time. Our respect for the team 🫡 We finished the day with a well-earned tasting at the no.3 bonded warehouse, where we savoured some 32yr Springbank, 28yr Longrow, and 23yr Hazelburn with Director of Production Findlay Ross, and spent an intimate time talking everything J&A Mitchell! ❤️🥃🥃 ——- #whiskyschool #Springbank #springbankwhisky #Campbeltown #caskfilling #bondedwarehouse #newmake #traditionalmethods #whiskytravels #reelslove #whiskylates
