Ilya Kabakov (born #onthisday, Dnipropetrovsk (present-day Dnipro), Ukraine, 1933) first visited Marfa in August 1992 and was taken with the special atmosphere at Chinati—its magnificent natural surroundings, the intensity of the sun, and the tranquility of the wide-open landscape. His installation “School No. 6” is reminiscent of an abandoned schoolhouse from the Soviet era. Everything is broken, boarded up, and neglected. Russian lesson books scattered on desks throughout the disordered classrooms, walls with peeling institutional-green paint, and an overgrown courtyard that rustles with the wind produce an uncanny experience for visitors. Kabakov intertwines memory, emotion, and history to create an installation full of complexity and feeling.
