Recently, I finally took the time to visit “l’appartement-atelier de Le Corbusier” after a year of living in Paris.
This 240sqm studio apartment became Le Corbusier’s home and painting atelier in 1934, where he lived with his wife Yvonne and Pinceau, their beloved schnauzer, for the rest of his life.
The apartment is on the last two floors of “l’immeuble Molitor,” designed by Le Corbusier and his cousin Pierre Jeanneret from 1931 to 1934.
The absence of any “vis-à-vis” allowed the architects to build facades entirely made of glass, creating the first glass residential building in the history of architecture.
After he died in 1965, the apartment remained vacant until it was classified as a Historic Monument in 1972, and the building’s street-facing facades, courtyard, roofs, and entrance hall were listed as Historic Monuments in 1990.
Nowadays, if you wake up early enough, like my friend @ine.ml and I, you can enjoy an (almost) empty museum/apartment space and project yourself living here for the rest of your life.
Two little details that amused me were the beautiful black and white picture frames spread around the space, showcasing the apartment when it was full of life, and the little pine cones you will find on all the furniture, preventing visitors from sitting on them.
