I gave up drinking 3 years ago... In the summer of 2019, I decided that enough was enough of the horrible “hang-xiety” feeling the day after a big night out. My heart would race, my mind would reel and I would spend the entire day an anxious mess. At first, when I told people, they made the classic “don’t be boring” comments but as my friends began to see how serious I was about putting down the booze, those comments subsided. I still get the occasional comment here and there when I meet new people but I now manage to laugh it off. My biggest tips for anyone who is sober curious: 1️⃣Be confident in your decision. This is YOUR body and YOUR choice! Other peoples opinions and comments are their issue and it’s none of their business what you put into your body. Make peace with the fact that this is a solo mission and not everyone is going to be on board with it. 2️⃣You have nothing to prove. If you want to stay out and party until 4am DO IT! If you want to go home - bloody do it! You don’t need to prove that you’re “fun still” even if you’re only on water. 3️⃣Find drinks you enjoy! I love asking the people behind the bar to make me the best mocktail they’ve ever made! Or I love a ginger beer with fresh lime👌🏻 4️⃣I also do shots of water whenever my friends are getting in the tequila! It’s fun to feel involved in the party still. 5️⃣Don’t be afraid to dance around like an idiot! Majority of the people in there are probably drunk and don’t care! Release your inhibitions. It’s so liberating to take the piss out of yourself and just dance around like nobody can see you. 6️⃣Appreciate the moment! I now remember every night out, every girls dinner, and every chilled evening. So I throw myself into conversations, I laugh and enjoy it! Some of my favourite memories have been made sober. 7️⃣You don’t have to go completely T-Total. You can reduce the amount of alcohol you have of an evening or even do an occasional sober night out a month.
