“Transforming one body into another’”
Israel Galván was already dancing in his mother’s womb, for she was also an accomplished dancer and being pregnant did not stop her. With his father, bailaor José Galván, being the founder of a Flamenco Studio, Galván was born into a family with Flamenco deep in its blood.
He has since transformed into one of the world’s most innovative dancers and choreographers.
Soon, he will be mesmerising audiences at Sadler’s Wells with his original interpretation of ‘The Rite of Spring.’ Following in the footsteps of Vaslav Nijinski’s notorious performances, Galván weaves Flamenco with Igor Stravinsky’s imposing score, subverting and reconstructing tradition, re-evaluating the full possibilities of Flamenco.
Reconstructing the language of Flamenco and challenging gender norms, Galván draws on a wide range of inspirations including bullfighting, football culture and activism.
We catch up with Spain’s most creative and innovative artist of his generation.
