I love new routes and sharing the stoke for the same, but I've never guided a first ascent before. A few weeks ago I had a great day out with two long-term guests on a first rock ascent. I kept telling them, "We probably won't get this done in a day, but we'll have an adventure!" @phillipmilner and @pat_.milner are stoked and competent climbers who wanted to learn to learn a little about new routing, so off went into the Ghost river area, which has basically unlimited new route potential . We wandered around in the beautiful woods eyeing different possibilities until we found a really nice option. Eight hours later we'd cleaned, bolted, and freed, "All it was cracked up to be," which Phillip and Patrick named after my continually telling them that it would be fun day, but that it's really hard to walk into a new area and do a new route in a day. But they learned fast, we worked well together, and it went down! "Cracked up" is on far right of the Kalbassa crag if you're interested in the second ascent, 5.10+ or so, and super fun!
I don't think guiding FAs is going to be a common thing, but it sure was fun. I had my first day with Phillip, Patrick and their dad maybe six years ago. They hadn't climbed much at that point, but we did a classic alpine mission together, then some great ice climbing, and now a first ascent. They are a solid family, people and climbers, thank you all for letting me share your mountain experience. I really love guiding and wish I had time to do more, but every day I that get to share wild places with good people is special to me. Plus it's fun, here's to everyone getting out into the mountains!
Oh, and the "PLS don't shoot" sign was on broken truck in the Ghost. It's still a wild place in there, hope the guy got it out!
