I remember sending in a first chapter to my editor and her responding with a very loving message suggesting this wasn’t it. OKAY. Challenge accepted. Let me try again. And again I tried and I got the same response. I wrote an email to my agents asking if it was too late to send the advance back and make it all go away. Not kidding. I struggled to find a way to write to those who had never been to therapy while simultaneously writing to those who have spent decades doing this work. I questioned how to land a message when there was no conversation to be had and no way to make it personal to the person receiving the message. I cried. I laughed (the kind of laugh you do when you’re delirious and can’t stop laughing but it’s really the panic kind of laugh) and then cried some more. But I kept writing for a reason. This was not a pretty process, but it was everything that I needed. Your support has blown me away. WE have 10 weeks until publication, and these weeks leading up to publication are huge. Prior to writing a book, I can tell you I had literally never pre-ordered a book. My thought was “I’ll get it when it’s out.
