@insidenatgeo is my home. It’s an idea, a place, a community, where I’ve met bold people, young and old, with transformational ideas that explore the outer limits of human endeavour to find solutions to the world’s biggest challenges. As President of the National Geographic Society, Alexander Graham Bell told Gilbert Hovey Grosvenor, the first editor of the National Geographic Magazine, Bell’s son-in-law: “The world and all that is in it is our theme”.
Bell, an innovator and visionary disruptor, the Elon Musk of his time, rescued the Society from bankruptcy by inviting anyone who wanted to help fund expeditions to become a member. He knew that we’re all “explorers” and photography would soon be able to share the remotest, most hidden, wonders of our planet, and beyond, so Bell took a big risk and ran the first photographs in the magazine in 1905. Like the telephone, National Geographic’s photographs would bring us all closer to each other.
Following his grandfather’s vision, Melville Bell Grosvenor, oversaw National Geographic’s first television broadcast in 1965. By 1990, the magazine had become embedded in popular culture with over 40 million readers worldwide. By 2010, under John Fahey’s leadership, the National Geographic Channel was reaching over 440 million households globally. That decade, @natgeo became the world’s largest social media brand with Declan Moore and Gary Knell at the helm. Today, guided by Courtney Monroe, we have almost 400 million followers across all major social media platforms.
Through all of this, the beating heart of National Geographic remained the Society founded in 1888 by Gardiner Greene Hubbard, Alexander Graham Bell’s father-in-law. Dr Jill Tiefenthaler is now leading the Society into the greatest century for exploration in the history of humankind. She’s establishing the Museum of Exploration in Washington DC, our most significant public‐space expansion in 137 years. This “basecamp” will become the home for explorers from around the world. Hubbard, Bell, and Grosvenor would have been proud. National Geographic started as a family business and Jill has brought us full circle by building us a home...
