According to the @usgs, there are approximately 1,350 potentially active (terrestial) volcanoes worldwide; only 500 of which have erupted historically. "There is [also] no definitive evidence that an eruption at one volcano can trigger an eruption at a volcano that’s hundreds of kilometers/miles away or on a different continent." It's a different story underwater. Thousands of submarine mountains lay scattered throughout the deep oceans and nearly all of them are volcanoes. Scientists also suspect that neighboring volcanoes eject larvae, or produce refugea, so that when one is erupting, species move between the volcanoes.
