CW: discussion of suicide. Think also about how my neurodivergency deviates from the expected ‘signs’ of suicidal ideation. Also, reminder that we do not say ‘committed suicide’. We say ‘died of suicide’.

[ID: a white background with tweets from skye that say “Today is #WorldSuicidePreventionDay . As someone who has consistent suicidal ideation, there’s a lot of misconceptions around suicide prevention.
As a trans person and educator, these thoughts have been especially loud the last 2 years.
A 🧵1. Suicidal ideation doesn’t just go away. It sits in the back of my mind, a thought I am not always aware of but know it’s present. This is different for each person but there’s not a magic cure that makes it go away. It can be an endless struggle. 2. People considering suicide don’t always give off ‘warning signs’. For myself, I still go through life. Work, write, date. The difference is the thoughts get louder. They start to take up more space. I don’t drastically change and this is common with autistic ppl. 3. Supports ARE NOT alerting authorities. When people say, I’m contemplating suicide, they are trusting you with info. They are looking to you for supports. Alerting authorities should never be the first thing we do. 4. Don’t take our suicidal ideation personally (especially autistic folx). Our thoughts are intrusive, dark and overwhelming. It’s not selfish. If we are telling you, we want support. If we are opening up, we are aware of our brain. Focus on asking questions. 5. Supports CAN BE having a therapist to talk to, a community of people I lean into and let them know where my brain is at, having a list of things to help my brain on bad days, prepared meals or ordering delivery, walking or working out, check ins from friends.” The rest in alt text]
