Nutritious food šŸš + friends šŸ¤ = a good time šŸ’› The children in the Santeng community of Tongo District, #Ghana, enjoy their porridge prepared from a local crop called Fonio. Have you ever heard of it?! šŸ¤”ā¬‡ļø Fonio is an ancient indigenous drought-resistant crop that grows in Ghana. It contains precious nutrients for the body's health and development. Due to its drought resistance, it can be planted without the use of inorganic fertilizer too! Rural women in this community cultivate Fonio crops guided by a female entrepreneur and a nutritionist, in order to create raw materials for fonio-based products. By consuming and selling the crops, these up-growers contribute not only to their health but also support children in the community with the nutrition they need to grow strong and healthy. Agro-processing improves food security and reduces post-harvest losses which are estimated at between 20-50% in Ghana. The process of transforming raw agricultural materials into value-added foods is key to ensuring sustainable change in the lives of vulnerable people and the national development of the country. WFP supports the Government in Ghana to carry out this initiative in two regions. The food produced also supports WFP's fight against hunger in crisis-hit countries like Burkina Faso. šŸ“·WFP / Derrick Botchway
