Is it acne?
Many times we get notice pimples and pus bumps on our skin and jump to think it’s acne. And while for the most part, many people do have acne there are some mimickers that might need to be treated differently ⬇️
1. Perioral Dermatitis: This was super common during the pandemic! This presents as tiny pus bumps around the mouth and eyes and typically spares right near the opening of the eye/mouth. Can be brought on by chronic steroid use on the face.
✅Treatment: Metronidazole, Oral antibiotics, Azelaic Acid
2. Acne Rosacea: Unlike acne, rosacea doesn’t have comedones (blackheads/whiteheads) but mostly pus bumps with a background of redness.
✅Treatment: Azelaic Acid, metronidazole, Ivermectin
3. Demodex Folliculitis: This is inflammation of your hair follicles by a common mite that normally lives on your skin! It typically presents with pus bumps around the eyes, forehead, and ears and can be quite big.
✅Treatment: Metronidazole, sulfur washes
4. Fungal Acne: This is not acne at all but folliculitis caused by yeast! This typically presents with smaller pus bumps that are typically itchier than acne.
✅Treatment: Ketoconazole, Selenium Sulfide, Zinc Pyrthione.
