What's your spark? Those little sparks of, "Wouldn't it be cool if..." are fragile; they need protecting from the damp death of, "Well, it's not really perfect timing, I'm not really ready, my grass needs watering, let's just do the easier thing..." But blow on those sparks, let them burn quietly, and some wild things can happen. For decades I've had this spark in my mind to launch from Golden, BC, and fly southeast over the burly Canadian Rockies, following the wildest terrain and coolest lines the day offered until I was on the eastern side 200+ kmh away. July 28th wasn't perfect; a little windy, I was a little tired, grass needed watering... On launch I committed to that spark, and the following 8 hours rank among the best of my life. I flew over beautiful terrain I promise to come back to on the ground, kissed the clouds and cranked desperate survival thermal turns low over a burned forest in the middle of nowhere. Finally I landed deep into the evening with only the sound of the wind and that spark glowing hot.
A few notes: I crossed one paved road in over 200km. That's the Canadian Rockies. There are often logging roads, but some areas would be an epic retrieve at best. I had two days of food and water, a tent, sleeping bag, stove, glider repair bits, headlamp, battery bank, lots of bug juice, topo maps, inReach satellite coms (no cell service for most of the areas I was over/in), and a full commitment to walk out as far as needed. I absolutely wanted to follow the best lines with zero thought of retrieve; just seize the day, sky and mountains for everything, and let that spark burn hard. This day was also special for me as I've been battling some weird airsickness stuff after Covid a few weeks ago, and I wasn't sure I could handle flying high and long. I'm back! Thanks to @Gin Gliders for the new Explorer, this is probably my last flight on the old one, it has served me well in ridiculous places like this for a few years! Had fun with the 360 camera, good to be editing a bit more, I hope it shows how good the flying can be here in the Rockies! #paragliding #savethespark
