Invisible work (noun): the behind-the-scenes labor that keeps a home and family running smoothly, although it is hardly noticed and rarely valued. While one partner is constantly thinking of what needs to be done, mapping out how to do it, and completing each task, the other partner may not even know those tasks exist. We call this cycle of task-generation CPE: conception, planning, and execution. Domestic labor doesn’t have to be split 50/50 to be fair — but no one partner should take on 100% of the immense amount of work it takes to keep a home running. We’ve made it our mission to make invisible work visible. Both partners need to handle the CPE (yes, all of it!) for at least a few tasks in order to avoid the pain and loneliness that invisible work and carrying the mental load can bring.
