16-year-old Areeb, who spent almost four months fighting for her life, has been reunited with some of the staff who helped save her! 🙌 Last year, Areeb spent time at @bhrut_nhs and @royalpapworth, severely ill from COVID-19. She is one of the youngest patients Royal Papworth has supported on ECMO — a form of advanced mechanical ventilation which acts like a lung outside the body, oxygenating blood for people in severe respiratory failure. Whilst Areeb was being transferred, her parents were picking up her GCSE results. Six months later, Areeb returned for her ECMO COVID-19 follow-up clinic where she had the opportunity to say thank you to the critical care team who cared for her. ‘If it were not for them not giving up on me and making quick decisions, I wouldn’t be here today. The treatment, the care, the help I received — I am truly thankful for all of it.’ As for her GCSEs? She passed them all! Having missed a year of school, Areeb is ready to restart her education studying biology, chemistry, physics and maths in the hope of one day becoming a surgeon. We’re so happy to see you better Areeb — wishing you all the best for the future (hopefully someday joining the NHS family)! 💙 #ThankYouNHS #COVID19 #CriticalCare #ECMO #GCSE
