Today marks 18 years since I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Although I’ve been cancer free for well over a decade, living with a colostomy bag is both a hidden challenge and a daily reminder to never take things for granted. When the pandemic first hit a couple years ago, the depth of uncertainty reminded me of the loss of control I felt during the chemo, surgeries and radiation.
Witnessing several friends under the age of 40 battle and eventually succumb to the same disease I faced was a big motivator to write my #denalibook. Feeling the weight of survivor’s guilt, I hoped telling my story could help save lives and offer encouragement to anyone facing a daunting challenge.
I also know how living with a colostomy bag can be an obstacle to pursuing an active lifestyle, dating and intimacy. I’m sharing this now in hopes that my story can encourage anyone facing seemingly insurmountable odds that it is possible to live to your full potential.
If you have any symptoms or a family history of colorectal cancer, please ask your doctor for a colonoscopy screening - it’s a quick test that literally saved my life.
Sending love and strength to those currently battling an illness or a dark time. 💙
To read more about my story you can find my memoir published on @penguinbooks at bit.ly/denalibook and at the link in my bio. I also narrated the audiobook which can be found on @audible or other platforms.
