The Greek drakon, from which “dragon” is derived, signifies sightedness and thus aliveness; gleaming light, and the eye that flashes fire and sees keenly, suggesting the uncanny, prescient “consciousness” of the unconscious, which, like the dragon’s head, “lives in eternity”
One of alchemy’s oldest emblems is the dragon, a version of the uroborus, the tail-eating serpent, self-fertilizing and self-devouring from the tail upward until its whole body is swallowed into its head, indicating that the primordial source, the “chaos,” the unconscious itself, initiates and sponsors the opus of renewal on its own matter.
