I was perfectly happy making indie dramas for the rest of my life until @ihatejoelkim wrote this boisterous tribute to queer Asian American friendship and chosen family. I could see how much these things meant to Joel and the depth of his feelings moved me immensely. His script reminded me to celebrate my friends, my chosen family. I wanted to pay this forward to audiences. Joel wrote this for his friends. I directed this for my friends. We went into production with this spirit, so it’s no surprise we made so many friends in the process. Even if this film never saw the light of day, I would have been fulfilled by the experience of working with so many talented people that I am proud to call family. I’m so thankful to this cast and crew of Fire Island. It was an honor and a joy.
