Part 1: What is RH factor and why this is important for people having an abortion or miscarriage after 12 weeks.
The Rh factor is a protein that can be found on the surface of red blood cells. If your blood cells have this protein, you are Rh positive. If your blood cells do not have this protein, you are Rh negative and will require a Rhogam injection if you’ve reached 12 weeks of pregnancy and your fetus is Rh positive.
(Example: person pregnant is O- and fetus is + blood type).
Rhogam prevents Rh sensitization, in which a body starts to produce Rh antibodies after Rh incompatibility occurs. This injection will also assist in preventing complications with future pregnancies.
