I am always excited about visiting historic seaside resort towns, especially one of the caliber of Capri, Italy — an island of timeless allure perched like a luminous gem in the Tyrrhenian Sea. My friend @esmailzadeh.mitra and I rented Casa Labocetta, which is part of a multigenerational, family owned historic villa. For centuries, Capri has inspired designers, architects, artists, and hospitality visionaries, much like those who later created the distinctive seaside resort town of Palm Beach, Florida. Capri’s story as a retreat dates back to AD 26–27, when Emperor Tiberius withdrew from Rome to this enchanting island. Ancient writers suggest his retreat may have been spurred by grief and mistrust following the suspicious death of his only son, Drusus Julius Caesar, in AD 23. From the commanding heights of Villa Jovis, perched on one of Capri’s two legendary peaks, Tiberius ruled the Roman Empire for a decade, surrounded by breathtaking views of the Bay of Naples and the imposing volcano Mount Vesuvius on the horizon. Even after Rome’s decline, Capri’s allure never faded. In the 19th century, it was rediscovered by affluent European travelers on the Grand Tour, who praised its soaring cliffs, fragrant lemon groves, and the shimmering wonder of the Blue Grotto. By the early 20th century, Capri had transformed into a glamorous haven, beloved by aristocrats, artists, and film stars who found inspiration in its luminous landscapes and stylish Piazzetta. Today, Capri remains a rare blend of history, elegance, and natural beauty.
