I wanted to set “Midnight Romance” in the ‘80s because the decade is so visually iconic—the colors, the music, the fashion, the outpouring of excess in the best ways possible. I was also inspired by the incredible documentary “Paris Is Burning” (Dir. Jennie Livingston), which follows the ball culture and drag scene in NYC during the ‘80s. I knew I wanted to lean into the camp aesthetics that are present in various ‘80s films and ultimately, ensure that my cast and crew had a great time during production. So adding some crash zooms in to my shot list was a must and I knew I needed a fun dance number. For the set design, I researched books and watched various obscure to mainstream ‘80s films taking notes on production design, wardrobe, and music. This led me to drive around all of LA visiting thrift stores every weekend to find all the set furniture and clothes and resorting to online purchases to fill in the missing pieces.
